One summer, a year earlier, Kotori and Yayoi are living together as stepbrothers after their parents remarry. An incident in Kotori's childhood separated him from his birth mother and sister. Although deeply hurt, he has fought desperately to keep going, watched over with warmth by Yayoi and his family. Then a woman claiming to be a reporter brings a book that throws Kotori's heart into turmoil.

The story moves forward to April, six months before the anime, at Kofuin University. Madoka is bored when he encounters Toma arguing with another student. Intrigued by this new discovery, Madoka persistently follows him around, ignoring Kazutaka's warnings. Meanwhile, Toma is deeply troubled by an impulse within himself that he cannot suppress.
