Oi, Oui Blu-ray with Bonus DVD

Oi, Oui traces the life of Katsushika Oi, the painter who worked beside her father Hokusai while developing a talent he recognized as exceptional. Masami Nagasawa stars as O-Ei in her first leading period-film role, reuniting with director Tatsushi Omori after Mother. Masatoshi Nagase plays Hokusai and Kaito Takahashi plays her friend Zenjiro, the artist Keisai Eisen.

After marrying a painter, O-Ei scorns her husband's pretentious work and the marriage ends. She returns to her father, and their relationship as parent and child becomes inseparable from that of teacher and pupil. In a dilapidated Edo tenement scattered with unfinished pictures, she begins to show the force of her inherited gift. Hokusai's repeated calls of 'Oi!' become the name under which she pursues her own career.

The film follows her friendship with Zenjiro, her quiet feelings for fellow pupil Hatsugoro and everyday life with her dog Sakura. More than twenty years after she leaves her marriage, a fire and the approach of famine lead father and daughter toward Fuji, the mountain at the heart of Hokusai's continuing artistic search. It is a portrait of a pioneering woman choosing how she wants to live, not simply whom she should live with.

Ryohei Otani, Eisuke Sasai, Eita Okuno, Shinobu Terajima, Misa Wada, Mutsuo Yoshioka, Shuto Hayasaka, Kumi Ryu, Ichika and Chisato Kobayashi join the cast. Omori writes and directs from material in Kyoshin Iijima's Katsushika Hokusai Den and Hinako Sugiura's Sarusuberi, with music by Yoshihide Otomo.

The two-disc edition contains the 122-minute film on Blu-ray and a bonus DVD, with making-of material, stage greetings and theatrical trailers. A booklet and picture-label discs complete the package. The feature has Japanese Dolby Audio 5.1 and stereo sound, Japanese stereo audio description and Japanese accessibility subtitles.
