Won't you play rock in my place?

Protagonist Kei Tsushima once attended a famous academically competitive school, but dropped out for a certain reason. He now attends an evening school.

Although he has stepped off the most direct track toward following his parents and becoming a doctor, he can still make up the lost ground.

Lately, however, he has started wondering: “Is that really all right?”

At evening school, he has met all kinds of people unlike anyone he knew before.

They have made him realize how much there is in the world that he knows nothing about.

...And yet, is it all right to go back again?

Do I really want to become a doctor?

Is that the reason I—the person called Kei Tsushima—was born?

Amid these doubts, a novel he submits to a city competition leads to a request from Yagihara, the president of a music production company: “Would you accompany our band on tour and write a report?”

The band he is to cover is Kacho Fugetsu, which once worked on the major-label scene.

Its leader, Korekiyo Hanai, is quite an eccentric. He repeatedly lectures Kei about the meaninglessness of music, saying, “Music is no good.”

Although Hanai leaves him bewildered, Kei attends his first concert and finds himself captivated by Kacho Fugetsu's music.

A few days later, while he still cannot forget the excitement of that first concert, Kei receives news that Kacho Fugetsu is breaking up.

Unable to accept the sudden breakup, he goes to persuade Hanai, but their arguments run in parallel and get nowhere.

Kei keeps asking him to restart the band whenever they meet. Finally, Hanai says:

“Kei, won't you play rock in my place?”

Kei Tsushima

The protagonist is a third-year student.

Born into a family of doctors dating back to his grandfather, he studied diligently to meet everyone's expectations and aimed to become a doctor without questioning it.

As a result, he entered the school with the highest academic entrance scores in the prefecture, but dropped out for a reason. He now attends evening school while independently studying to enter medical college.

His current school's classes do not help with the entrance examinations, but he likes its atmosphere of welcoming many different kinds of people and enjoys attending.

As if dropping out of high school were not enough, he has recently begun questioning whether to keep pursuing medicine, and seems likely to worry the people around him again.

He looks serious, but perhaps he is a hopeless case.

Or perhaps he is simply a troubled young man.

Mikazuki Hanai

A student the same age as Kei, she is Korekiyo Hanai's younger sister and a vocalist. She has congenital albinism.

She lives in Hokkaido, but after refusing to attend school and quitting, she comes to visit her brother and meets Kei.

She gets along well with Korekiyo and sings well, but is not eager to pursue musical activities herself.

Her features and figure are beautiful, yet the more one looks at her entirely white appearance, the more otherworldly she seems, dividing people's opinions.

She is eccentric in a different way from her brother, with distinctive ways of thinking and acting that often bewilder the people around her.

Meguru Kosaka

Kacho Fugetsu's bassist performs bass and backing vocals. Despite appearances, she is a skilled bassist.

She loves music and playing with the band, and works with her bass whenever she has spare time.

On the other hand, she is careless about other matters and quickly falls asleep when something feels complicated, making her completely unreliable outside music.

She rarely talks about her life before joining the band. Despite not earning very much, she lives in a nice apartment, and her private life is shrouded in mystery.

Yako Ozaki

She was Kei's junior in middle school and is now his classmate. She calls him “senpai” and looks up to him.

Family circumstances led her to stop attending middle school.

To help her impoverished family, she now works part-time at a supermarket checkout during the day and attends evening school at night—a hardworking girl with a warmth rarely seen these days.

She even loves the parents who gave her these circumstances. How does one raise someone so good-hearted?

Despite her hardships, she lives each day brightly and positively, and all her classmates are fond of her.

Korekiyo Hanai

Originally from Hokkaido, he is a principal member of Kacho Fugetsu, a band that once worked on the major-label scene, and performs vocals and guitar.

A musician recognized for his talent, he composes the band's music.

After making a major-label debut, the band signed with Yagihara's Star Records label and now performs as an independent band.

He has a strong philosophy about music and a difficult temperament, associating with only a very small circle of people.

Fans may see that personality as charisma, but those close to him apparently think he is simply a strange, gloomy fellow.

Meeting Kei has a profound influence on the younger man.

Kaneda

Kei's classmate at evening school has flashy hair and clothes, an angry-looking expression and an arrogant manner. He looks rough—the sort of person one would prefer not to get involved with.

His classmates apparently feel the same way: nobody talks to him, and Kei has barely interacted with him either.

A chance occurrence brings him into contact with Kei, however. Kei discovers that he is an enthusiastic rock fan, and they become close.
