The first two Zero Escape games in one Double Pack

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward come to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita together. These are the first two escape adventure games in the Zero Escape series, in which people confined by the mysterious Zero must take part in a deadly game.

The series’ unpredictable development incorporates science fiction, thought experiments, occult elements, philosophical questions and psychological warfare. Its intricate, bold tricks and astonishing stories earned strong responses, especially overseas.

The original Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors launched on Nintendo DS in 2009, while Virtue’s Last Reward followed on PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS in 2012. This release introduces changes that also make it enjoyable for players who already know the originals.

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

November 1, 2027. Junpei, abducted by the mysterious Zero, finds himself locked aboard an unfamiliar passenger ship with eight other men and women, including his childhood friend Akane. Mysterious numbered bracelets have been fitted to all their wrists.

“You will now play a game.” The game described by Zero, the mastermind behind the incident, is the Nonary Game.

Numbered doors are scattered throughout the ship. Combining the numbers on the participants’ bracelets to match a door’s number allows them to open it. Ultimately, opening door 9 will let them escape.

They have just nine hours before the ship sinks. As fragments of the mystery gradually emerge, what is the Nonary Game’s true purpose?

Virtue’s Last Reward

Sigma is trapped in a mysterious facility with eight unfamiliar men and women. Among them is Phi, a mysterious girl who somehow knows him.

The AI Zero III suddenly appears and tells them they must play the AB Game to escape.

It is a simple choice between cooperation and betrayal. Each choice raises or lowers the numbers on the participants’ bracelets. At 9 points or more, they can open door 9 and escape. At 0 or below, poison inside their bracelet is injected, ending their life.

The participants repeat the AB Game in pursuit of escape. What awaits them after they overcome its many dangers?

High-resolution graphics

Almost all graphical data has been increased in resolution for the PS4 and PS Vita ports. This strengthens immersion throughout the games and improves the visibility of mechanisms and items in the escape sections, making them more comfortable to play.

Voices added to Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

The novel sections’ conversations now feature full voice acting, as in Virtue’s Last Reward. Junpei, voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki, and Murasaki, voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, retain their cast from the third entry, Zero Time Dilemma, for continuity across the series.

Both games also include English voices, offering a different atmosphere from the Japanese audio. Sigma, the protagonist of Virtue’s Last Reward, does not have a voice.

A new flowchart for Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

The series’ stories weave together many complex branches. In the original 999, seeing every route required playing repeatedly from the start. The added flowchart lets you inspect scenario branch points and return to replay scenes you have already experienced.

Further improvements to playability

Both games add a function to skip unread text, particularly useful to players who know the originals. The background music and sound effects in 999 have been reproduced at higher audio quality, complementing the higher-resolution graphics and new voices.

The PS Vita release also adds PlayStation Vita TV compatibility, which the original Vita version of Virtue’s Last Reward lacked. This compatibility note concerns the Vita edition; the item here is the PS4 disc.

Virtue’s Last Reward increases its save slots from 3 to 27. Options now allow the volume of background music, sound effects and voices to be adjusted separately.
