In Holy Spirit Village, Tang San lives with his blacksmith father. Since his mother's death, he has cared for his father, who drinks heavily, while devoting his days to blacksmithing and practising the teachings of the secret manual Xuantian Baolu.

One day, a giant poisonous spider attacks him in the forest. A stranger saves him at the last moment. The man can transform into a wolf and introduces himself as Su Yuntao of the Spirit Hall. He tells Tang San several intriguing things: everyone possesses a martial spirit; the spider that attacked him is a soul beast, whose power can be obtained by defeating it; and he himself is a soul master.

Tang San is invited to the martial-spirit awakening ceremony held for the village children. Following a recommendation, he enters a junior soul-master academy. Before he leaves, his father forbids him from joining the Spirit Hall and firmly tells him to keep the existence of Xuantian Baolu secret.

At the academy, an unusual group awaits him, including an enigmatic odd-job worker known as Master, who is deeply knowledgeable about martial-spirit theory. The city lord's son becomes hostile towards Tang San. Together with Xiao Wu, a girl with a rabbit martial spirit who loves a fight, and Master, Tang San becomes involved in an incident that leaves them on the run…
