Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) Original Soundtrack brings back a record of the legendary summer of 1969 that lay hidden for fifty years.
Directed and executive-produced by Questlove, the film received both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Its music documents the Harlem Cultural Festival, held in New York between June and August of the same summer often remembered for Woodstock.
Supported by the city and its mayor, the festival took place over six Sundays in Mount Morris Park, drawing around 300,000 people. Its lineup ranged from popular artists to legends, embracing soul, gospel, blues, Latin and funk in a reflection of Harlem's culture.
Apart from a small portion, these performances remained in storage for roughly fifty years. Their overwhelming power and passion cross time to stir listeners today: a musical legacy worth passing on.
