The Prince of Tennis creator Takeshi Konomi devised Summer Valentine’s Day as a way to thank the series’ fans. Every February 14, characters receive enormous numbers of chocolates, with the record exceeding 180,000. These annual totals have attracted online news coverage and appeared as rankings in the manga volumes.

In 2017, Konomi extended that expression of gratitude to August 14, introducing Summer Valentine’s Day and returning his thanks to the fans in song.
