Teito Monogatari Complete Blu-ray

Yasunori Kato plots to destroy Tokyo by unleashing the vengeful spirit of Taira no Masakado. Standing against him are occult practitioners, guardians and a shrine maiden whose destinies are tied to the city, while the secrets of the Tatsumiya family draw them deeper into his scheme. Set from the end of the Meiji era into the early Showa period, Teito Monogatari turns the capital into the battleground of an occult epic.

Hiroshi Aramata's novel, winner of the 1987 Japan SF Grand Prize, combines supernatural warfare, historical spectacle and erotic horror. Madhouse adapted it into a four-part OVA in 1991-1992, with Rintaro supervising the series, scripts by Akinori Endo and character designs by Masayuki. The cel-animated production follows Kato's confrontations with the onmyoji Yasumasa Hirai, the sorcerer Kamo and Keiko, the shrine maiden sent by Masakado. Kyusaku Shimada, who portrayed Kato in the live-action film, returns as his voice, joined by Kaneto Shiozawa, Keiko Han, Yoko Asagami and Koichi Yamadera.

This complete edition contains Mato-hen, Shinsai-hen, Ryudo-hen and Bosatsu-hen, totaling 170 minutes. The programme has been newly scanned at 5K and remastered at 2K, with the original 4:3 image presented with side panels. Video supplements preserve Tokyo Psychic Map parts 1-3 and an interview with Kyusaku Shimada and Rintaro from the original OVA releases; these archival extras are presented in standard definition. Japanese Linear PCM stereo audio is included, with no subtitles.
