The Apothecary Diaries Animation

A young poison taster solves difficult cases within the imperial inner palace in this hugely popular palace mystery series, whose books had surpassed 33 million copies at the time of this edition’s updated presentation. Its second television anime season was announced for 2025.

In a great nation at the centre of the continent, a girl lives in the inner palace where the emperor’s consorts reside. Her name is Maomao. Once an apothecary in the pleasure district, she now works as a lowly palace servant.

One day, she learns that the emperor’s children have all died young. Hearing that both surviving infants are also growing weaker from illness, she begins investigating out of curiosity—as if to say there can be no such thing as a curse.

The beautiful eunuch Jinshi makes Maomao the poison taster for the emperor’s favourite consort. Raised in the pleasure district, this apothecary has little interest in people, but an extraordinary obsession with poisons and medicines draws her into rumours and incidents. Beautiful roses have thorns; the garden of women is full of poison, with no shortage of gossip and intrigue.

Jinshi keeps pushing troublesome tasks onto her, yet Maomao gets the job done. Today, too, this exceptionally poison-loving girl races through the inner palace.

Extras include an audio commentary for the opening episode, the project promotional video, teaser and main promotional videos, opening and ending sequences without credits, and footage from the advance-screening stage greeting at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya.

First-press extras comprise a special slipcase, newly illustrated digipak, special booklet and project promotional-video storyboards. These depend on the pressing supplied and are not guaranteed with the regular pressing.
