The Apothecary Diaries Animation

The hugely popular imperial-palace mystery series comes to anime, following a young poison taster as she solves one difficult case after another. The edition’s original promotional presentation celebrates a series with more than thirty-three million copies in circulation.

In a great nation at the centre of the continent, a young woman lives in the inner palace, home to the emperor’s consorts. Her name is Maomao. Once an apothecary in the pleasure district, she now works as a lowly servant in the palace.

One day, she learns that the emperor’s children have all died young. Hearing that the two children still living are also growing steadily weaker from illness, Maomao begins investigating the cause out of curiosity, as if to declare that there can be no such thing as a curse.

The handsome eunuch Jinshi appoints Maomao as poison taster to the emperor’s favourite consort. Little interested in people but extraordinarily obsessed with poisons and medicines, this apothecary raised in the pleasure district finds herself drawn into rumours and incidents.

Beautiful roses have thorns, and this garden of women is full of poison, with no shortage of gossip or intrigue. Although Jinshi keeps saddling her with increasingly troublesome matters, Maomao gets the work done. This exceptional poison-loving young woman is racing through the inner palace again today.

Shared extras include audio commentaries for episodes seven and eight and the mini-anime Maomao no Hitorigoto.
