In a great nation at the centre of the continent, a young woman lives in the rear palace, home to the emperor's consorts. Her name is Maomao. Once an apothecary in the pleasure district, she now works as a low-ranking palace servant.

One day, Maomao learns that the emperor's children have all died young. Hearing that his two surviving children are also ill and growing weaker, she begins investigating out of curiosity, convinced that no curse could be responsible.

The beautiful eunuch Jinshi makes Maomao the poison taster for the emperor's favourite consort. With little interest in people but an extraordinary obsession with medicines and poisons, this apothecary from the pleasure district becomes entangled in rumours and incidents.

Even beautiful roses have thorns. This garden of women is full of poison, with no shortage of rumours and conspiracies. Jinshi keeps pushing troublesome tasks onto Maomao, yet she handles the work that comes her way. Today, the remarkably poison-loving young woman is once again running through the rear palace.
