The Heike Story: Requiem Phases Original Soundtrack collects Kensuke Ushio's background music on two CDs, with 43 tracks including pieces absent from the accompanying LP edition.
Handed down by biwa performers and influential across literature and theater, The Tale of the Heike becomes a television anime based on Hideo Furukawa's vivid translation. Director Naoko Yamada, writer Reiko Yoshida, original character designer Fumiko Takano and composer Kensuke Ushio depict the epic lyrically through a young girl's eyes.
This is Yamada and Ushio's third collaboration and their first series together. Their close conceptual approach extends to selecting music scene by scene and episode by episode, producing an unusually detailed musical design.
Traditional gagaku instruments, strings, post-rock and electronic music form a bold, rich score unrestricted by nation or period. The soundtrack also includes instrumental versions of protagonist Biwa's recitations, placing the biwa's stirring resonance within contemporary sound.
