The Kingdoms of Ruin Animation

A revenge story born from despair begins. With more than one million copies in circulation at the time of its original release, yoruhashi’s dark fantasy from Monthly Comic Garden and MAGCOMI makes its long-awaited television anime debut. First broadcast in October 2023, the series follows Adonis, a witch’s apprentice who swears vengeance against humanity, the witch Doroka who travels beside him, and their battles with those who stand in their path.

Yokohama Animation Laboratory, known for The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt and Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal, brings this world to the screen. Director Keitaro Motonaga’s credits include Jormungand and LBX Girls; series composition and scripts come from Takamitsu Kono, whose work includes Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth and She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man. Character designer Hiromi Kato brings experience from Guilty Crown and Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut. Together, the experienced team gives dynamic form to the story’s world.

Kaito Ishikawa, known from Haikyu!! and One-Punch Man, voices Adonis, while Azumi Waki, whose credits include Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Tokyo Revengers, plays Doroka. Ryoko Shiraishi, Satoshi Hino, Hikaru Tono and Kisho Taniyama join the cast. Hana Hope—introduced as a rising seventeen-year-old artist in the original production announcement—performs the opening theme Kieru Made. Who-ya Extended, known for themes from Psycho-Pass 3 and Jujutsu Kaisen, performs the ending Prayer. Both songs were written for the series.

Witches once brought wisdom and peace to humanity. The Redia Empire’s Gear Expansion, a super-industrial revolution, creates a scientific civilisation that surpasses magic, and witches become enemies said to obstruct progress. The witch hunts begin. Adonis, a human raised by the witch Chloe, loses his beloved teacher and vows revenge on his own kind. Sustained by despair, what salvation can he find at the end of slaughter?

This first volume contains episodes one to four. Permanent extras include episode two audio commentary with Kaito Ishikawa and Azumi Waki, plus the creditless opening sequence.
