The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei Animation

The Mononoke Lecture Logs of Chuzenji-sensei is an original spin-off and prequel to Natsuhiko Kyogoku’s Hyakki Yako novels, a series with more than ten million copies in circulation. Drawn by Aki Shimizu with a script by Hanzo Tamura, the manga follows Kyogokudo during his years as a high-school teacher and is serialised in Kodansha’s Comic DAYS. Its television anime began broadcasting on April 7, 2025.

This is a story from before the spiritual adviser known as Kyogokudo opened his second-hand bookshop. In Tokyo in 1948, with the war still a recent memory, Kanna Kusakabe advances to her second year at a newly established high school and meets its new Japanese-language teacher, Akihiko Chuzenji. Strange incidents connected with the supernatural begin happening around her. Once again seeking help, Kanna opens the door to the library preparation room, where the perpetually stern-looking Chuzenji-sensei is waiting. Their mismatched teacher-and-student partnership brings a tale of school life, youth and uncanny mysteries.

Part 1 contains episodes one to six. Video extras include the creditless opening and ending sequences, promotional videos and commercials, and episodes one to six of Chibizenji-sensei: After-School Lecture Logs.

The release comes in a three-sided case with newly drawn jacket artwork by character designer Masahiko Suzuki. A special full-colour booklet accompanies a newly drawn manga and puzzle booklet by Aki Shimizu.
