The Rickshaw Man (Muhomatsu no Issho) 4K Remastered Blu-ray

Hiroshi Inagaki's 1958 Golden Lion winner returns in a 4K-remastered Blu-ray presentation. Toshiro Mifune stars as Matsugoro Tomishima, a rickshaw man in Kokura, Kitakyushu, whose quick temper and recklessness conceal an unusually generous heart.

After helping Toshio, a boy injured in a fall from a tree, Matsugoro becomes close to the child's father, Captain Yoshioka, and his family. When the captain dies following an illness contracted during rain-soaked military exercises, Matsugoro becomes a companion to Toshio and a steadfast support to his widowed mother. Years pass, and Toshio grows into adulthood. At the Gion festival in 1917, Matsugoro pours his sadness at their approaching separation and his unspoken affection for Toshio's mother into the powerful rhythms of the festival drums.

Hideko Takamine, Hiroshi Akutagawa, Choko Iida and Chishu Ryu join Mifune in the cast. Adapted from Shunsaku Iwashita's work, the film has a screenplay by Mansaku Itami and Hiroshi Inagaki, music by Ikuma Dan and production by Tomoyuki Tanaka. This 104-minute colour CinemaScope presentation offers the original Japanese mono soundtrack in Linear PCM and the original three-channel soundtrack in DTS-HD Master Audio, with accessible Japanese subtitles.
