The Vision of Escaflowne Anime

The Vision of Escaflowne brings together the complete twenty-six-episode television series and the Escaflowne theatrical film. Both follow Hitomi Kanzaki into Gaia, a world of extraordinary machines, rival kingdoms and uncertain destinies, but each gives her journey its own form.

In the television story, Hitomi is an ordinary first-year high-school student who enjoys fortune-telling. As she tries to confess her feelings to an older student, a swordsman named Van and an enormous dragon suddenly appear in the school grounds. A vision lets her warn Van of danger and save him. Moments later, a pillar of light carries them to Gaia, where her powers draw her into a struggle whose outcome is entangled with the feelings and choices of those around her.

The series begins with Fateful Confession, The Girl from the Mystic Moon, The Gallant Swordsman, The Diabolical Adonis, The Seal of the Brothers and City of Intrigue. Unexpected Partings, The Day the Angel Flew, Memories of a Feather, The Blue-Eyed Prince, Prophecy of Death and The Secret Door lead into Red Destiny, Dangerous Wounds and Lost Paradise. The Guided Ones, The Edge of the World, The Gravity of Destiny, Operation Golden Rule of Love, False Vows and Fortune's Reaction carry the conflict toward The Black-Winged Angel, Storm Premonition, The Choice of Destiny, The Zone of Absolute Fortune and the finale, Eternal Love.

In the film, a dispirited Hitomi has lost her sense of purpose in Tokyo when a mysterious man sends her into an unfamiliar world. Gaia is a violent realm of humans and beast people, ruled by swords and magic. Her meeting with Van, a young king whose country has been destroyed, draws her into a battle over the colossal armor called Escaflowne. It had remained dormant as stone until her arrival. Its power is said to have destroyed an ancient civilization, yet its true nature is unknown. Only a resonance between a rare Dragon Clan pilot and the Wing Goddess from the Mystic Moon can bring the armor to life. A song promises that the goddess will awaken it and lead Gaia to a new world, but also warns that the armor will burn everything away. Hitomi and Van must confront whether their bond can save that world rather than destroy it.

Kazuki Akane directs, with Shoji Kawamori contributing to the original concept, supervision and series composition. The creative team includes character designer Nobuteru Yuki, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane, Koji Osaka and Hirotoshi Sano, with music by Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi. Maaya Sakamoto voices Hitomi and sings Yakusoku wa Iranai. Tomokazu Seki voices Van, Shinichiro Miki voices Allen, Ikue Otani voices Merle, Joji Nakata voices Folken and Minami Takayama voices Dilandau. The television cast also includes Mayumi Iizuka as Millerna, Jurota Kosugi as Dryden, Chafurin as Mole Man, Koji Tsujitani as Jajuka and Masato Yamanouchi as Dornkirk. In the film, Iizuka voices Sora and Aki Takeda voices Millerna.

Three main-program Blu-rays and one bonus Blu-ray provide approximately 706 minutes on the main discs and 73 minutes of bonus material, totaling 779 minutes. Extras include a discussion with Akane, Seki and Miki, a memorial promotional video set to Yakusoku wa Iranai, a theatrical trailer and North American promotional footage. The fifty-six-page booklet features new interviews with eleven contributors, including an Akane and Sakamoto conversation and interviews with Kawamori, Yuki, Yamane and Kanno. Yamane illustrates the wrapped box, while Yuki illustrates the inner jacket.

Japanese audio is included, with a Korean audio option for the film. Optional Japanese subtitles accompany the film's Korean track. The main discs use Linear PCM stereo, with some Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Linear PCM surround material; the bonus disc uses Linear PCM stereo.
