Tokyo Storefronts - The Artworks of Mateusz Urbanowicz records the individuality of Tokyo's older shops in watercolour. The Polish illustrator brings together fifty works: the original ten paintings from the series and forty new storefronts, ranging from traditional wooden shops to buildings with European architectural influences. Some of the places depicted have since closed, giving the collection the additional character of a record of the city's changing streets.
Sketches of shop interiors, overhead views and accounts of the buildings accompany the finished paintings. Step-by-step making-of sections explore how the illustrations were created, while a closing feature introduces the artist's workspace and tools. A large map printed inside the cover locates the shops, and every explanatory text is provided in both Japanese and English.
Urbanowicz studied animation in Kobe before working as a background artist at CoMix Wave Films, contributing to Makoto Shinkai productions including Your Name. His attention to buildings carries into this collection, edited by Side Ranch and published by MdN Corporation in a 160-page modified B5 paperback edition.
