Weathering With You - Makoto Shinkai Film Background Artbook reveals more than 240 of the detailed backgrounds created for the animated film. Tokyo changes with the weather as sunny streets, rain-soaked neighborhoods and expansive clouds establish the story's shifting atmosphere.

Fourteen themed sections move through the city's shopping districts, abandoned buildings, Suga's office, Hina's apartment, homes, shrines, alleys and parks, then follow the characters' escape, the skies and the world years later. Comments from the art staff accompany the backgrounds.

Shinkai discusses layouts and storyboards, while art director Hiroshi Takiguchi joins shrine-painting artist Nizo Yamamoto in conversation. Interviews with the assistant art directors provide further production insight. Takiguchi also explains the art boards, color scripts, rough sketches and 3D models used during pre-production, illustrated with working material.
