Yu Sakai returns to his musical roots on PASADENA, his eighth original album following the fifteenth anniversary of his debut. Looking back to the 2000s, when he developed his craft in Los Angeles and Shibuya, the album combines eight new hip-hop- and R&B-flavored songs, four made in LA and four in Tokyo, with three New York recordings previously released digitally in 2024.
Gotta Get Up feat. magora was co-written in LA with producer and songwriter Justin Gray, whose work includes Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne and John Legend, and Anita McCloud, known for work with Usher and TLC. Back in Japan, Sakai completed the grooving R&B song with guest vocalist magora.
The title track was co-written with Nash Overstreet, whose credits include Britney Spears, Kelly Rowland and Timbaland. The Tokyo sessions also feature Japanese hip-hop and reggae figures K Dub Shine and PUSHIM. PASADENA takes its name from the city outside Los Angeles where Sakai once lived.
