Humanoid Monster Bem Animation

The final chapter of Humanoid Monster Bem asks whether its heroes can finally achieve their wish. The television anime BEM, created to celebrate the original series’ fiftieth anniversary in 2018, comes to the cinema. They have behaved more humanely than humans, helped people and longed to become human themselves—now the answer to their journey is revealed. Guest performers include Toshiya Miyata of Kis-My-Ft2, Koichi Yamadera and Nana Mizuki. The theme song is performed by Rib, the popular singer whose online videos led to his major-label debut.

Two years after the incident in Libra City, detective Sonia is still searching for the missing humanoid monsters. Following a sighting, she visits the pharmaceutical company Draco Chemical. There she encounters Belo, now grown stronger and fighting evil alone; Bella, who refuses further battles and hopes to live as an ordinary girl; and a man named Belm who looks exactly like Bem.

After Sonia approaches him and calls him Bem, Belm begins to suffer nightmares every night. A warm home with a beloved wife and children, familiar exchanges with kind neighbours, easygoing colleagues and fulfilling work: the ordinary life he thought would never change starts to collapse. “Who am I?” Their destinies pass and intertwine, eventually leading to the secret behind the humanoid monsters’ creation. What answer will they find to their long-held dream, and what future will they choose?

The Deluxe Edition includes a three-sided box illustrated by original character designer Range Murata and a reduced-size reproduction of the dubbing script. Katsuyuki Konishi and Toshiya Miyata discuss the film in the audio commentary Bem and Burgess’ Draco Chemical PR Department Communications.
