EDF, save a world without hope
The year is 2040. This third-person action shooter depicts the EDF and its soldiers continuing to fight on an Earth devastated by invaders from outer space.
An entirely new EDF is born, with a world distinct from the numbered Earth Defense Force series.
A distinguished creative team contributes to the game, with Takashi Niigaki composing the theme and Ryu Oyama designing the creatures.
This world is now waiting for heroes.
Story—2028
Unknown extraterrestrial invaders called the Aggressors arrived. A gigantic, one-kilometer-long floating object, the Hivecraft, suddenly flew in from deep space. In only three days it passed over America, Russia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe, dropping enormous insect-like creatures and killing machines around the world and launching attacks on many countries and regions.
Humanity crossed national boundaries to establish the Earth Defense Force, known as the EDF, to confront the threat. Yet the military situation became overwhelmingly unfavorable, and most of humanity's once-prosperous cities were reduced, one after another, to heaps of rubble.
Important military bases around the world that might resist the invaders had already been devastated. It seemed humanity would meet its end, powerless to act...
2032—a glimmer of hope
A technology called PA Gear brought humanity a ray of hope.
The EDF independently developed this enhanced combat exoskeleton to fight the Aggressors. Its power source was an Energy Core, made by processing the unknown minerals called Energy Gems found inside the Aggressors. It gave infantry soldiers superhuman physical abilities.
This led the EDF to redirect the many powerful weapons developed against the Aggressors toward use as personal firearms by mobile infantry. Though small in scale, the mobile infantry equipped with PA Gear succeeded in slowing the invasion.
Humanity sought a path to survival through a war of attrition, using infantry to compensate for the overwhelming gap in military strength.
2033—a costly victory
The EDF, until then trampled by the Aggressors, launched a dramatic counteroffensive. It committed to an all-out attack on the Hivecraft as it descended over Los Angeles.
The desperate operation to shoot it down seemed to commit every remaining force. Even PA Gear equipped with new Energy Cores still at the research stage was deployed in combat.
On that day, humanity finally won. Elite soldiers equipped with the new Energy Cores severely damaged the enemy mothership Hivecraft and brought it down.
But victory came at a tremendous cost. The EDF lost most of its forces, every elite unit that took part in the operation, and even the technology behind the new Energy Cores...
2040—seven years later
In the ruined, deserted cities, the enormous creatures left without their master, the Hivecraft, continued breeding and increasing in number. Giant insects had replaced humanity as the Earth's new rulers.
Some surviving citizens hid underground and continued living in urban areas, but most became refugees searching for safer places.
Although the EDF had succeeded in shooting down the Hivecraft, its strength no longer resembled its former power. The ever-multiplying giant creatures continued to weaken it.
Its central command headquarters had been destroyed, and the organization existed in name only. The remaining units continued resisting independently, but were forced into guerrilla resistance from bases that had barely survived.
To survive in a world eaten away by despair, humanity had no choice but to continue a hopeless, unending battle...
