Unpredictable entertainment from Koki Mitani!
The sixty-first NHK Taiga drama depicts the life of Hojo Yoshitoki, who wins the struggle for power and rises to the pinnacle of the samurai class, against the backdrop of the late Heian and Kamakura periods. Following Shinsengumi! and Sanada Maru, this is another grand epic from the acclaimed creator.
At the height of Taira power, Hojo Yoshitoki is merely the second son of a minor local clan in Izu. But the marriage of the exile Minamoto no Yoritomo to his elder sister Masako sets the wheels of destiny in motion.
In 1180, Yoritomo gathers the warriors of the Kanto region and raises a rebellion against the Taira. The Hojo clan joins this reckless gamble. Becoming Yoritomo's closest aide, Yoshitoki undertakes political manoeuvres at the risk of his life and ultimately defeats the Taira clan.
Yoritomo establishes the shogunate and becomes shogun. Yet at the very peak of his power, he meets a mysterious death. The second shogun, Yoriie, struggles desperately to surpass his great father. The third, Sanetomo, tries to survive by remaining a figurehead. The shoguns are replaced one after another amid the power struggle between Yoshitoki and the shogunate's retainers.
As the uncle of these two shoguns, Yoshitoki strives to steer the government. When the legitimate Minamoto line comes to an end, the Hojo clan stands at the summit of the shogunate. In the capital, the retired emperor Go-Toba raises an army to destroy Yoshitoki. With the fate of samurai rule at stake, Yoshitoki takes on his final decisive battle.
