Chibi Maruko-chan Animation

Originally released in 1992, the second feature-length Chibi Maruko-chan film comes to Blu-ray for the first time to celebrate its thirtieth theatrical anniversary.

After learning the song Menkoi Kouma at school, Momoko Sakura—better known as Maruko—chooses it as the subject of an art-class painting, but cannot work out how to depict it. Near her grandparents’ home in Shizuoka, she meets a young woman who draws portraits. The woman teaches her further verses and explains that the song is a sad story about a boy forced to part with his horse because of war. Maruko paints the boy’s feelings and his promise never to forget.

When her painting wins a prize, Maruko visits the young woman to tell her the news. The woman’s boyfriend, who taught her those lyrics, has proposed: he is returning to the countryside to run a ranch and wants her to come with him. She refuses because she wants to keep painting. Maruko earnestly insists that she can paint anywhere.

On the wedding day, Maruko quietly slips out of school and calls out that she will never forget her. Some time later, a book containing the woman’s paintings arrives. It is the same treasured book Maruko had only recently earned in exchange for cleaning a chicken coop.
