Journal with Witch Animation

Tomoko Yamashita’s Journal with Witch comes to Blu-ray in its television anime adaptation, which began broadcasting in January 2026. Serialised in Shodensha’s FEEL YOUNG from 2017 to 2023, the original manga’s eleven collected volumes had surpassed two million copies sold. It follows a reserved novelist and her late sister’s daughter as they learn to share a home despite the years between them.

At her sister and brother-in-law’s funeral, the shy novelist Makio Kodai impulsively decides to take in their orphaned daughter, Asa Takumi. This unexpected arrangement transforms Makio’s previously quiet daily life. Unaccustomed to living with another person, she feels anxious about sharing her home with a fifteen-year-old.

Asa, meanwhile, has lost both her parents and her sense of belonging. In the unfamiliar loneliness that follows, she encounters Makio’s way of living: an adult who does not behave as she expects an adult to, and who is nothing like her mother.

Makio struggles with social interaction and prefers solitude; Asa is open, friendly and straightforward. Their personalities and values could scarcely be more different. Hesitantly and awkwardly, the two begin living together, each feeling her way towards a shared life while carrying her own loneliness.

Volume one contains episodes one through six. Character designer Kenji Hayama provides a new illustration for the three-sided case. The forty-page booklet includes story and character introductions, cast comments and interviews, production materials and a discussion between director Miyuki Oshiro and series composer and screenwriter Kohei Kiyasu. A clear bookmark and stickers featuring colour artwork from the original manga are also enclosed.

Extras include the creditless opening and ending sequences and the teaser promotional video. Episode one’s commentary features Miyuki Sawashiro and Fuko Mori, with Sayaka Ohara joining them for episode two.
