Kinokoinu Animation

A little strange and wonderfully gentle, Kinokoinu makes the time spent with those you love feel even more precious. Kimama Aoboshi’s manga, published in Tokuma Shoten’s COMIC Ryu and with more than 1.75 million copies in circulation at the time of the release announcement, becomes a warm everyday fantasy anime.

One day, picture-book author Hotaru Yuyami notices a bright pink mushroom growing beneath the bridal-wreath shrub in his garden. As he gazes absent-mindedly at it, it suddenly starts to move. It wags its tail like a dog, yet one ear is unmistakably a mushroom. Although he cannot make sense of this mysterious creature, Hotaru decides to live with it.

Kinokoinu draws where it should not and always wants to eat every last piece of its favourite takoyaki. Hotaru’s childhood friend and editor Komako, along with Yara from the mushroom research institute, is drawn into their amusing daily life. For all its carefree behaviour, Kinokoinu can quietly offer support when it matters. Together, Hotaru, Kinokoinu and their friends discover that simply being with one another can make ordinary days enjoyable.

The animation is produced by C-Station, known for the Laid-Back Camp series, whose Blu-ray and DVD releases had passed 100,000 copies and whose film reached one billion yen at the Japanese box office. Careful drawing and expressive character acting give Kinokoinu its gentle yet substantial character. Volume one presents the opening four episodes with an archive of the August 3, 2024 Kinokoinu Information Bureau livestream featuring Daiki Kobayashi and Yuto Uemura, plus promotional videos. Its permanent packaging includes a special digipak newly illustrated by character designer Daisuke Endo and a picture-label disc.
