Magi Stage & Musicals

The stage of dreams and magic returns in the second musical adaptation of Magi. Shinobu Ohtaka’s popular manga, serialised in Weekly Shonen Sunday with more than 25 million copies in circulation, is a magical adventure fantasy built around the friendship between Aladdin and Alibaba Saluja as they seek treasures hidden in mysterious dungeons appearing across the world.

The first musical, staged in Tokyo and Osaka in June 2022, followed the story through the thieves’ fortress arc. Its acclaimed, grand and beautiful suite of songs now gives way to a fierce yet beautiful rhapsody. This Balbadd chapter follows Aladdin’s search for Alibaba after their separation in the seventh dungeon, Amon, while exploring the bonds and conflicts between Alibaba and Cassim. The production played thirteen performances at Tokyo’s Stellar Ball from 9–18 June 2023 and four at Osaka’s Morinomiya Piloti Hall on 24–25 June.

Aladdin travels through the dungeons in search of the ultimate treasure: the Djinn’s Metal Vessels. Looking for Alibaba, he reaches the Kingdom of Balbadd, a country thrown into turmoil by its king’s misrule and the rise of the Fog Troupe, a band of outlaws led by Alibaba himself.

Their long-awaited reunion is short-lived. Frustrated by Alibaba’s seemingly changed personality and rejection of Aladdin, Morgiana intervenes forcefully. Alibaba finally reveals the days he spent with his old friend Cassim, with whom he leads the Fog Troupe, and his own origins as a prince of Balbadd.

Meanwhile, Sinbad, the legendary conqueror of seven dungeons and king of Sindria, arrives to restore trade that has abruptly ceased. Recognising the Kou Empire’s intervention behind the unrest, he makes his next move. Why is Prince Alibaba fighting his own country alongside Cassim and the Fog Troupe, and where will their struggle lead?

Extras include rehearsal and backstage making-of footage, wide-stage recordings of two carefully selected singing scenes, and the promotional video first released on the official YouTube channel on 15 March 2023. A booklet is included.
