Suzume Animation

A culmination and crowning achievement in animated cinema, Suzume arrives in this standard edition. The publisher’s release introduction reports 11.05 million admissions and 14.6 billion yen at the Japanese box office, marking a third consecutive film to pass ten million admissions following Your Name and Weathering with You. Overseas admissions reached 34 million, with box-office revenue of 27 billion yen. The film received the Excellent Animation of the Year award and its music the Best Music award at the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize.

Suzume, a seventeen-year-old girl living in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young traveller named Souta who tells her, “I’m looking for doors.” Following him into abandoned ruins in the mountains, she finds an old door standing alone. Drawn toward it by something she cannot explain, Suzume reaches out.

Souta explains that disasters enter from the other side of these doors. He travels as a Closer, shutting and locking them.

Suddenly, a mysterious cat named Daijin appears before them. “I like Suzume.” “You’re in the way.” The moment Daijin begins to speak, Souta is transformed into a chair: the small chair Suzume used as a child, with one leg missing.

As Souta runs off on three legs to catch the fleeing Daijin, Suzume hurries after him. Before long, doors begin opening one after another across Japan.

Guided by strange doors and a small cat, Suzume’s journey to close them carries her through Kyushu, Shikoku, Kansai and Tokyo, drawing in the Japanese archipelago. Helped by the people she meets along the way, she reaches a place where a forgotten truth awaits her.

For this release, the film’s imagery has been refined in detail. An audio commentary explores the intentions behind individual scenes and stories from production. Supplementary material also includes theatrical trailers and a filmography feature. A newly illustrated clear sticker is enclosed.
