An extended interview with Goro Miyazaki approaches the project through its planning, characters, story and setting. Character designer Katsuya Kondo's sketches and design sheets appear alongside his own interview, showing how Earwig, Bella Yaga and Mandrake took shape.

The detailed CG environments receive their own attention, with commentary from a key member of the background-art team explaining work developed through repeated experimentation. The collection places those stages within Ghibli's move from a predominantly hand-drawn tradition to this new production method. Edited by Studio Ghibli, the 224-page Japanese volume presents the character development and making-of material in colour.
