Jakko-tai Movie and Stage Blu-ray Set

Jakko-tai Movie and Stage Blu-ray Set brings together the linked screen and theatre productions from Toei's Movie x Stage project. Musical period drama meets covert action as a team of condemned criminals takes on dangerous assignments in exchange for escaping execution.

The film follows the secret Jakko-tai unit in an outwardly peaceful Edo. A wave of disappearances is blamed on man-eating demons, while the Otaiko sect's leader is worshipped as a protector. Suspecting a connection, the shogunate orders the unit to infiltrate the sect and steal an object that its physician believes could help defeat the creatures. A young man searching for his missing sister joins the mission after recognising the sect's singer, but his attempt to rescue her puts the operation in danger and exposes the leader's buried past.

The stage production sends the team to a remote island to recover an abducted shogunate official in exchange for a Tokugawa treasure. Pirates steal the ransom en route, and the island proves to be ruled by the mysterious Queen Tekona and devoted to the deity Tokoyogami. As the unit negotiates for the hostage, Surume's concealed history and the island's secrets reveal a threat that reaches far beyond the rescue mission.

Ryuji Sato leads a returning cast including Nichika Akutsu, Shohei Hashimoto, Shin Koyanagi and Tomoki Hirose. The film disc includes trailers and Japanese audio commentary featuring Sato, Akutsu, director Ryosuke Kanezaki and producer Tsuyoshi Nakano.

The two region-free Blu-rays contain approximately 221 minutes in total. The film is presented in 1080p with Japanese Linear PCM 5.1 audio and stereo commentary; the stage production uses 1080i and Japanese Linear PCM stereo. Neither programme has subtitles.
