The Eminence in Shadow Anime

An unbeatable protagonist, overwhelming adolescent fantasies and a serious comedy of misunderstandings! The popular light-novel series, with more than two million copies in circulation at the time of the announcement, became a television anime in October 2022.

The original work is the hugely popular light novel The Eminence in Shadow. A boy who admires the eminence in shadow — neither the protagonist nor the final boss, but someone who hides his strength, lives as an inconspicuous background character and secretly intervenes in the story to display his power — trains every day while staying out of the spotlight. Then he is reincarnated in another world! The anime follows the serious and comic exploits of a protagonist who secretly acts, as a game, to destroy a dark cult invented in his imagination, and of the Shadow Garden organisation he leads.

The original first-production campaign advertised lavish extras for every volume: a slipcase newly illustrated by original character designer Tozai, a special digipack and a special booklet. Volumes 1 and 3 also advertised storyboard collections, while volumes 2 and 4 advertised original-drawing collections. These first-production physical extras are no longer available according to the catalogue and are excluded from the promised contents of this regular edition.

The original first-production extras for this volume were: the Tozai-illustrated slipcase, special digipack, special booklet, storyboard collection and a serial code for The Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden. The advertised game rewards were one guaranteed SS-character single-draw gacha ticket, 100 Crystals of Wisdom, 10 Maguronald Burgers, 100 Large Magic Juice Gummies and 50,000 Zeni. The advertised redemption deadline was December 31, 2025 at 23:59, with a notice that the deadline could change without warning. Codes past the deadline are invalid and cannot obtain rewards; each account could enter the code for a particular volume only once, with further details on the official website. The stated deadline has passed. These historical first-production code rewards are excluded from the promised contents.

Regular video extras: chibi-character anime Kage-Jitsu! episodes 8–12; creditless opening version 3; and web previews for episodes 11–15 in normal and special versions. The main programme contains episodes 11–15.

Original broadcast schedule: from October 5, 2022 on AT-X, TOKYO MX, BS Nippon TV and other stations. AT-X: Wednesdays at 22:30 from October 5, with repeat broadcasts on Fridays at 10:30 and Tuesdays at 16:30. TOKYO MX: Wednesdays at 23:30 from October 5. TV Aichi: Thursdays at 26:35 from October 6. KBS Kyoto, Sun TV and BS Nippon TV: Wednesdays at 24:30 from October 5. These times reproduce the original Japanese late-night broadcast notation.

Story: The eminence in shadow is neither the protagonist nor the final boss. He normally hides his ability and lives as a background character, intervening behind the scenes and secretly demonstrating his strength. A boy who longed for this role trained in pursuit of power while living inconspicuously, but lost his life in an accident and was reincarnated in another world. Reborn as Cid Kagenou, he treats this as a lucky opportunity to enjoy his eminence-in-shadow persona. While he operates behind the scenes as a joke to defeat a dark cult he made up, it turns out that the cult actually exists. The girls he casually takes as followers misunderstand and worship him, and he becomes a real eminence in shadow without even realising it. Shadow Garden, the secret organisation led by Cid, will eventually destroy the darkness of the world.
