Earth has recovered from its war with Gamilas and is enjoying unprecedented prosperity in 2201. Susumu Kodai, Daisuke Shima and Shiro Sanada now escort interplanetary resource convoys, but an unexpected transmission interrupts their routine. A distant world is pleading for Earth's help. Sensing a new threat, Yamato's former crew board their ship in its undersea dock and depart once more, facing the powerful White Comet Empire in a struggle to protect those they love.

Kei Tomiyama returns as Kodai, with Yoko Asagami as Yuki Mori, Goro Naya as Captain Okita, Hideo Nakamura as Shima and Takeshi Aono as Sanada. The cast includes Shinji Nomura as Aihara, Yoshito Yasuhara as Ota, Akira Kamiya as Kato, Kazuo Hayashi as Nambu, Ichiro Nagai as Tokugawa and Dr Sado, Kenichi Ogata as Analyzer, Akira Kimura as Captain Hijikata and Isao Sasaki as Hajime Saito. Masayuki Ibu voices both the commander-in-chief and Dessler, Tetsuya Kaji voices the president and Eken Mine voices the politician. Osamu Kobayashi plays Emperor Zwordar, with Kazue Komiya as Sabera, Chikao Otsuka as Balsey, Osamu Saka as Goland, Ichiro Murakoshi as Geinich, Kazuyuki Sogabe as Razelar, Kosei Tomita as Zabaibal, Osamu Ichikawa as Mil and Koji Yada as Talan. Miyuki Ueda voices Teresa, and Taichiro Hirokawa narrates.

The 151-minute film comes in a 32 cm square EMOTION Big Jacket. Extras include a version restoring the original theatrical ending credits, a teaser and theatrical trailer. Sound Story YAMATO volumes 6-11 assembles miniature narratives entirely from the series' sound effects, arranged by Mitsuru Kashiwabara. The still-image archive contains theatrical pamphlet excerpts, lobby cards, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's storyboards and production settings for the characters, mechanical designs and artwork. Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio stereo and monaural tracks are provided without subtitles.
