Nintama Rantaro Stage & Musicals

The April 2021 revival of Nintama Rantaro’s eleventh musical, Terrifying Test of Courage, comes to Blu-ray. The Tokyo performance is joined by the eleventh production’s Ninjutsu Academy Festival in Osaka and a special side story from the Spring Fan Appreciation Festival.

On an errand for the headmaster, Rantaro, Kirimaru, Shinbei and library committee member Choji Nakazaike borrow a book from the priest of Kinraku Temple. On their way back, they pass a deserted mansion and see a terrifying ghost. The sixth years decide to investigate, the fourth years draw fifth-year Kanemon Ohama into planning a test of courage, and the first years go treasure hunting. Their aims differ, but everyone heads for the same mansion.

Fireballs fly, skeletons appear and Shinbei even wets himself. The Dokutake ninja, plotting to take over the academy, trap the apprentice ninja inside, while the mansion’s residents join the uproar. What will become of the investigation, the test of courage and the treasure hunt? This chaotic, slapstick-filled revival promises a generous helping of gags.

The bonus programme includes making-of footage, another story featuring the fourth and sixth years, a Nintama game showdown, final curtain calls from Tokyo and the online finale, and Shinobi no Sugata filmed at Amagasaki Castle. The Osaka festival and Wicked Ninja Dokutake: The Trials of Middle Management add further performances.
