The Art of Studio Ghibli gathers 844 background paintings from 27 films, selected under art director Yoji Takeshige's supervision. Brushwork, color, perspective, light and shadow reveal how the settings were built.

The journey begins with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies and Kiki's Delivery Service. Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso and Ocean Waves lead into Pom Poko and Whisper of the Heart. On Your Mark, Princess Mononoke and My Neighbors the Yamadas complete the earlier period.

Spirited Away is followed by The Cat Returns, Ghiblies Episode 2, Howl's Moving Castle, Tales from Earthsea and Ponyo. The Secret World of Arrietty and From Up on Poppy Hill continue into The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and When Marnie Was There. The Red Turtle, Earwig and the Witch and The Boy and the Heron bring the coverage through 2023.

An interview with Takeshige closes the collection. Edited by Studio Ghibli and published by PIE International, this Japanese-language hardcover contains 568 pages.
