Introduction The Sword Art Online novel series, published by Dengeki Bunko, is written by Reki Kawahara, winner of the Grand Prize at the fifteenth Dengeki Novel Prize. Set in the next-generation VRMMORPG Sword Art Online, its story follows the adventures of Kirito. It has enjoyed great popularity since the first original novel appeared in April 2009, and by 2021 the series had surpassed twenty-six million copies in circulation worldwide. The first television anime season aired in 2012. Four television series had subsequently aired, alongside an extensive range of adaptations including games and manga. In 2017, Sword Art Online the Movie — Ordinal Scale opened in cinemas and became a major hit, exceeding 2.5 billion yen in box-office revenue.

Sword Art Online Progressive is a reboot series by the original author himself. It explores the journey from the first floor of Aincrad, the beginning of everything in the SAO story, in detailed depth. This new Aincrad arc, written by Reki Kawahara from Asuna's perspective, has been adapted into an entirely new animated film.

This may be a game, but it is no child's play. Game over leads directly to death in the real world. Sword Art Online, the death game at the origin of it all, begins anew on the cinema screen.

Story This is a story from before the Flash and the Black Swordsman came to be known by those names.

On that day, Asuna Yuuki happened to put on a NerveGear. She was a girl in her third year of junior high school who had previously lived a life unrelated to online games. The game master announced: “This may be a game, but it is no child's play.” Death inside the game would lead directly to death in reality.

Every player who heard this fell into confusion, and the game filled with cries of anguish. Asuna was one of them, but even without understanding the rules of this world, she set out to conquer Aincrad, the floating steel castle whose summit could not be seen.

As she survived in a world where death was always close at hand, Asuna experienced a fateful encounter, and then a separation. Tossed about by the reality before her, she continued to fight with all her strength. Appearing before her was the solitary swordsman Kirito.
